James A. Schachner, PE
Give a structural reality check. ~ Jim’s first responsibility.
It is hardly surprising that Jim's first thoughts are to responsibility. As head of the structural department, Jim carries a particularly heavy weight. If an architect misses a roof detail, a carpet may be ruined, but if Jim undersizes a column, people could be hurt. So in his world, there is no room for error and no room for slack.
He extends this rigor to every aspect of his professional life from designing new buildings, to repairing damaged structures, to teaching young engineers in the firm, and even to the hours he keeps. Jim is one of the finest mentors GAA has ever had, skillfully balancing independence with guidance, and experience with receptivity to new ideas.
On a normal day, you'll find Jim in his office by 6am, having already completed his regular two mile morning swim. With his passion for motorcycles, you'll find him cruising to job sites, meetings, or to the ball game on his Harley.
