A new addition
to an existing library building to house the functions of
a Distinct County Supervisor. The facility includes
staff
and administrative offices, staff lounge, a public multi-purpose
room, conference rooms, and support spaces.
Extensive programming and planning meetings were held with
County representatives and building users to develop design
concepts and approaches for the project. After the analysis
of multiple sites for the most appropriate location and consideration
that land is a premium in Fairfax County, collocation with
Kings Park Library was chosen for its sustainable merits.
The shared use of the library site alleviated the potential
burden of new site development; site acquisition costs were
eliminated and in-place utilities and infrastructure were
adapted and utilized for the project.
In addition to creating a community focal point for the new
portion of the facility; design work was focused on the integration
of the building into the context of the existing surroundings.
The result is a seamless design which integrates materials
and exterior elements of an existing building, while providing
a distinct addition with a focal point for the new government
office. The architecture aptly integrates the language and
materials of the library, a one-story brick building which
features a series of patina green shed roofs popping above
the main roof line.
Looking at the building as a whole, it
is hard to tell where
the old stops and the new begins. The addition, however,
features a truncated cylinder with a sloping two-level
roof which houses
the multi-function meeting space for government and general
public use. Siting of the addition and construction on
the tight site was coordinated and controlled to minimize
disruption
to the existing trees and plantings.
