Planning
and design for the creation of a ceremonial forecourt
at the Fort Myer Post Chapel to provide an area for formal
Military Honor Guard formations during events at Arlington
National Cemetery. The design developed structured boundaries
and defined edges for the area, provided a staging area
for horse-drawn caissons and delineated parking areas.
The planning for the forecourt was performed in conjunction
with the realignment of McNair Road at its intersection
with Lee Avenue on the Post. The intersection realignment
improves the traffic flow, diverting it away from the
forecourt area, and creates an major entry point to the
Chapel and Forecourt. Existing utilities were rerouted
so as to not interfere with the new forecourt activities.
The planning effort was coordinated with all project
stakeholders, including Chaplains, Old Guard military
personnel, Post Police, traffic and safety personnel
and administrative staff.
