Design services
for the expansion of an existing visitor's center building
at a 1,261-acre natural conservation park. The park harbors
mature forests, wildflower meadows and wetlands which are
home to a variety of wildlife. The building plan opens public
areas for visual control from the information counter and
separates them from the administrative areas. The exhibit
areas are naturally lighted by a bronze reflective glass
block
fenestration. Programmatic elements of the facility include
a 75-seat auditorium with audio- visual capabilities; administrative
and exhibit areas; classrooms and demonstration laboratories.
The sloping roof lines of the existing building were maintained
in the addition, with dramatic peaks to emphasize the new
larger interior spaces. An earth berm around the building
and warm earth tones was used to reinforce the facility's
natural setting.
