Programming, planning and design for a new 40,982 SF facility for the consolidation of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Northern Virginia District operations and maintenance functions. In addition to administrative offices, conference rooms and support spaces for Northern Virginia District management, the facility houses maintenance bays for light, medium, and heavy vehicles, central parts distribution systems, locker rooms, managers’ offices for the maintenance wings, break rooms and training areas. The parts department is contracted out and operates independently, providing separate service counters for each of the maintenance areas. The facility provides separation between the operations and maintenance functions with dedicated entrances and support facilities, and a shared outdoor courtyard for both uses. Extensive day-lighting, including automatic controls for interior lighting, was employed in the maintenance areas. Site work for the project includes employee and visitor parking, traffic circulation, equipment and vehicle storage areas.
